"Grinder's Switch is a state of mind – a place where there is no illness, no war, no unhappiness, no political unrest, no tears. It's a place where there's only happiness – where all you worry about is what you are going to wear to the church social, and if your feller is going to kiss you in the moonlight on the way home. I wish for all of you a Grinder's Switch.”
~~ Miss Minnie Pearl
Centerville, a town of about 3,500, sits on a hill overlooking the Duck River 55 miles southwest of Nashville. It’s the county seat of Hickman County. The old town, established in 1823, has walls, fences of limestone blocks, and old houses with character.
The town square dominates the top of the hill where Highway 100 passes through it on the way to Memphis—an old pre-Interstate route. The town extends about five miles north on Highway 100 through the Fairfield area. It encloses the city airport west of town in the Nunnelly area.
Centerville, Tennessee is indeed known as the hometown of the legendary country comedienne Minnie Pearl. Her real name was Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon, and she became famous for her role on the television show "Hee Haw" and her performances at the Grand Ole Opry.
Minnie Pearl is remembered for her signature greeting, "How-dee! I'm just so proud to be here!" and her iconic price tag hanging from her straw hat.
You'll find music, food, and outdoor adventures nearby. Enjoy country music at the Grinder's Switch Music Hour, which features live performances by local and regional musicians each Saturday morning.
Taste the nation's best banana puddings in October at the National Banana Pudding Festival. Fishing is great in the ecologically rich Duck River, and the cool, clear waters of the smaller rivers and streams like Piney River, Swan Creek, Lick Creek, Beaverdam Creek, and Cane Creek are clean water treasures.
